srceSrce je organ veličine stisnute šake i obzirom na posao koji obavlja neverovatno je maleno. Naime, svakoga dana srce se kontrahuje oko 100.000 puta, obavljajući pri tome svoju osnovnu funkciju pumpe, pri čemu svakoga minuta srce ispumpa oko 5 litara krvi. Svakoga sata kroz srce prođe oko 300 litara krvi. Pri broju otkucaja od 50 u minuti, što je karakteristično za period mirovanja zdravo srce ispumpa u minuti oko 3.5 litara krvi, na 90 otkucaja u minuti poveća na 6.3 litra u minuti, a na 110 otkucaja do nivoa od 7.7 litara u minuti.

Ovo se pumpanje vrši ritmički i ujednačeno, a krv odlazi u sve delove tela dopremajući neophodne hranljive sastojke i kiseonik. U mirovanju potrošnja kiseonika iznosi 0.25 litara u svakoj minuti, a potreba za kiseonikom raste do 3 i više litara u minuti pri većem fizičkom opterećenju. Srce dakle ima svoju cirkulatornu ulogu, ulogu pumpe, koju omogućava dobra funkcija prirodnog električnog stimulatora, koje daje impuls srca da obavlja svoj deo posla i da na taj način doprema krvlju kiseonik u sve delove tela.
